Want to live the closest thing to a beach lifestyle in Minnesota? Look no further than Minnetonka Beach. One of the smallest cities in the state of Minnesota, family friendly Minnetonka Beach is known as "The Beach" by its residents and is home to one of the most famous former hotels around Lake Minnetonka.
The Hotel Lafayette was developed by railroad baron James J. Hill in 1870 and was the first summer resort on Lake Minnetonka. The fire eventually destroyed the hotel, but after rising from the ash for a second time, the structure was rebuilt as the Lafayette Club, a private golf club. It remains a magnet for some of the area’s power brokers.
Minnetonka Beach, with just 550 residents and encompassing less than half a mile of water and land, punches way above its weight class. Gracious homes line the shore; their boats bobbing in the water off the many docks that dot Lake Minnetonka. Minnetonka Beach is on a peninsula between Crystal Bay and the Lafayette Bay, which also features a park. Parks abound on the outlying islands off the coast of Minnetonka Beach. Big Island Regional Park and Allen Wildlife Refuge are on Big Island. Mahpiyata Island is off the tip of the peninsula and is home to Pleasant View Park.
The iconic Minnetonka Beach water tower rises on the skyline. And the historic St. Martin’s By-the-Lake Episcopal Church, a clapboard structure with its gingerbread detail and bell tower, remains like it was originally constructed in 1888, designed by famous architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the Minnesota State Capitol, The George Washington Bridge, and the U.S. Supreme Court building. This “the seaside style of New England” is modeled after the interior of a Stave Church in a museum in Oslo, Norway.
Average home here prices are $1,595,000. Residents send their children to the Orono School District (ISD 278).
