The second-largest of the Lake Minnetonka cities that create the Western metro, Minnetonka, population 51,000, has much to offer residents and visitors alike. Derived from the Dakota Indian word mini tanka, meaning "great water", Minnetonka was first settled by Dakota and Ojibwe Indians. In 1822 European settlers traveled along the now Minnehaha Creek to Lake Minnetonka, a Native American sacred place.
